Security forces arrested an alleged overground worker (OGW) linked to terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday and recovered arms, ammunition and other items from his possession.
Officials said the arrest was made during a joint operation by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF) at a checkpoint established at Zandfaran-Goriwan Crossing in Narwav.
The operation involved personnel from 46 Rashtriya Rifles, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Baramulla Police, 53 Battalion CRPF and 112 Battalion BSF.
According to officials, a suspicious person approaching from the Goriwan side attempted to escape after noticing the security checkpoint. Alert personnel chased and detained him on the spot.
A search led to the recovery of a camouflaged MP-5 type pistol, a magazine containing 10 live 9mm rounds, a mobile phone and a black backpack.
The arrested person was identified as Aijaz Ahmad Ganie, son of late Mohammad Sultan Ganie and a resident of Namblan in Sheeri area of Baramulla.
Police have registered FIR No. 37/2026 at Sheeri Police Station under relevant sections of law. Further investigation is underway to determine his alleged links and activities.
Security agencies describe OGWs as key support networks for terrorist groups, providing logistical assistance such as shelter, transportation, communication support and movement of weapons and funds.
The latest action comes amid heightened security measures in the Valley following recent attacks targeting non-local workers and a police personnel. Officials said security agencies have intensified efforts to identify and track individuals suspected of supporting terrorist networks.
