India’s Murali Sreeshankar added another Commonwealth Games medal to his growing list of international achievements by claiming the silver medal in the men’s long jump with a best effort of 8.09 metres in a fiercely contested final on Wednesday.
The Kerala athlete produced his medal-winning jump in the second round after opening the competition with a leap of 8.03m. Although he registered two fouls during the middle stages of the contest, Sreeshankar remained firmly in contention and closed his campaign with jumps of 7.94m and 7.97m to secure second place.
The 27-year-old, coached by his father S. Murali, had also finished with silver at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022, where his 8.08m effort made him the first Indian male long jumper to win a silver medal at the event. His latest performance underlined his consistency on the international stage.
Jamaica’s 2019 world champion Tajay Gayle captured the gold medal with a winning leap of 8.15m, while Scotland’s Stephen Mackenzie settled for bronze after recording 8.08m, just one centimetre behind Sreeshankar in a closely fought contest.
India also enjoyed a strong overall showing in the event, with Lokesh Sathyanathan finishing fifth after producing a best jump of 7.97m.
The men’s long jump final featured a high standard of competition, with four athletes crossing the eight-metre mark. Sreeshankar’s second-round effort ultimately proved enough to secure India’s latest athletics medal at the Glasgow Games.
The silver medal took India’s overall tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 to 13, comprising two gold, eight silver and three bronze medals. In athletics and para-athletics, India has now won five medals, including one gold, three silver and one bronze.
