India produced a memorable performance in the para athletics competition at the Commonwealth Games 2026, with Dilip Mahadu Gavit winning the gold medal in the men’s 100m T47 after setting a new Games record, while compatriot Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi claimed silver to complete a historic Indian one-two finish.
Gavit stormed to victory in 10.71 seconds, eclipsing the previous Games record with a commanding run. Basil followed closely in 10.83 seconds, his season’s best effort, ensuring India occupied the top two spots on the podium in one of the standout races of the competition.
England’s Kevin Santos secured the bronze medal in 10.85 seconds, narrowly finishing ahead of Australia’s Jaydon Page, who clocked 10.97 seconds.
The gold was India’s third of the Games, following earlier triumphs by weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila in the women’s shot put F57 event. The result also lifted India’s overall medal tally to 15, comprising three gold, nine silver and three bronze medals.
The race highlighted India’s growing strength in para athletics, with both Indian sprinters delivering exceptional performances on the Glasgow track. Gavit’s Games record and Basil’s silver further reinforced the country’s emergence as a major force in international para sport.
Gavit’s journey to the top has been one of resilience and determination. Born into a farming family in Toran Dongari village near Nashik in Maharashtra, he lost his right arm below the elbow after a childhood accident led to complications because of delayed medical treatment.
Undeterred by the setback, he pursued athletics with remarkable dedication, training on village roads before being identified by coach Vaijnath Kale, who helped shape his professional career in para athletics.
The Indian sprinter had earlier won gold in the men’s 400m T47 event at the 2022 Asian Para Games, securing India’s landmark 100th medal at the continental event. He also reached the final of the men’s 400m T47 at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, underlining his consistency on the international stage.
