US President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned of a forceful American response following what he described as another attack by Iran-backed forces, saying the United States would retaliate after five incoming missiles targeting US forces were intercepted.
Speaking at the White House after announcing plans to redevelop Washington Dulles International Airport, Trump said he had been briefed about the reported drone attack on an LNG tanker off Egypt and indicated that Washington was preparing a military response while leaving open the possibility of a future diplomatic agreement.
“In the meantime, we’re going to be hitting them very hard because it’s our turn to hit them,” Trump said, adding that those responsible were aware retaliation was imminent and had urged the US not to respond.
According to the President, five missiles travelling at high speed were intercepted before reaching their targets. He praised the Patriot air defence system for neutralising all the incoming projectiles, describing it as evidence of America’s military capabilities.
Asked whether the US would routinely respond militarily to such attacks, Trump replied, “Pretty much,” while dismissing suggestions that the latest incident would force Washington to scale back its military presence in the region.
He also claimed that those responsible had attempted to de-escalate the situation by apologising, but maintained that a military response remained necessary.
Commenting on reports that Iran could receive hundreds of rocket launchers from China through Pakistan, Trump said such a move would surprise him, claiming Chinese President Xi Jinping had assured him that Beijing would not supply weapons to Tehran.
The US President also referred to his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reiterating his call for an end to the war in Ukraine. He further urged the US Congress to strengthen pending measures against Iran by adding tariffs alongside sanctions, arguing that such steps would increase economic pressure on Tehran.
Trump’s remarks come amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, where repeated attacks involving Iran-backed groups and US military personnel have kept the region on edge. Washington has consistently maintained that it will respond to attacks on American forces while continuing diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider regional conflict.
