At least seven police personnel were killed and 22 others injured after heavily armed militants launched an attack on a police checkpoint in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, triggering an intense gun battle with security forces.
The attack took place in Hangu district late Wednesday, according to local police officials.
District Police Officer Tariq Habib said security personnel retaliated immediately, killing eight militants and injuring six others during the exchange of fire. A clearance operation was launched in the area to track down any remaining attackers and secure the site.
No militant outfit had claimed responsibility for the assault at the time of reporting.
The latest attack comes amid a series of deadly assaults targeting Pakistan’s security forces in the northwestern region in recent weeks.
On July 23, at least 14 people, including soldiers, police personnel and a provincial forest department official, were killed in a suicide bombing targeting a security post in Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to official sources, an explosives-laden vehicle was detonated near the security installation, causing extensive casualties and destroying the post. The victims included nine soldiers, four police personnel and one forest department official. Another 24 people, including 20 soldiers and four police personnel, sustained injuries and were shifted to nearby hospitals.
Rescue teams carried out search and evacuation operations after the blast, while security forces launched a follow-up operation in the surrounding area, during which three militants were killed.
Two days later, on July 25, Pakistan’s military said it had thwarted another attempted attack on a security check post in South Waziristan district. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), security personnel intercepted and destroyed an explosives-laden vehicle before it could breach the perimeter of the installation, preventing further casualties and damage.
The recent incidents underscore the continuing security challenges faced by Pakistan’s law enforcement and military personnel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
