Ferozepur, June 24, 2026 (Vikram Ditya Sharma)
When polio struck Rajan Kumar at just nine months of age, it robbed him of the ability to walk. What it could not take away, however, was his determination to build a meaningful life. Confined to a wheelchair since childhood, the 46-year-old teacher from Guruharsahai refused to let his disability define his future.
Instead, he turned his struggles into strength and has spent nearly 24 years educating young minds, proving that courage is not measured by physical ability but by the determination to keep moving forward.
Rajan Kumar has been serving at Rishi Valmiki Government Primary School, Guruharsahai, since 2002. Over the years, he has taught hundreds of children and earned the respect of students, parents and colleagues alike. Those who know him say his life story is not one of disability, but of resilience, dedication and an unwavering commitment to education.
Born into a middle-class family, Rajan is the son of Pradeep Kumar, who runs a grocery store in Guruharsahai, and Nirmala Rani, a homemaker. Growing up was far from easy. Everyday activities that others took for granted often required extraordinary effort. Yet Rajan remained focused on his studies and refused to allow his physical limitations to become barriers to his ambitions.
After completing his graduation in 1998, he pursued Elementary Teacher Training and secured a government teaching job in 2002. Determined to continue learning, he completed his B.Ed in 2004 and gradually rose through the ranks to serve as the headmaster of the school. For Rajan, education was never merely a profession; it was a way of giving back to society and inspiring children to believe in themselves.
In 2010, Rajan married Seema, a native of Fazilka and a differently-abled teacher who had been working in a private school. He describes her as his greatest source of strength. Through every challenge and achievement, she has remained by his side, helping him navigate life with confidence and optimism. “By God’s grace, we are living a happy life together and have no complaints from anyone,” he says with a smile.
For Rajan, the school is more than a workplace. The nearly 145 children studying there are like family to him. He says interacting with students and watching them grow gives him immense satisfaction. “Teaching children gives me strength and happiness. Their progress motivates me every day,” he says.
Beyond the classroom, Rajan is actively involved in social service and has a keen interest in carrom. He is associated with the Ludhiana-based organisation ‘Manukhta Ki Sewa Sabse Badi Sewa’ and also works with Ferozepur Foundation and Ideal Villager Sports Welfare Society, contributing to various welfare initiatives.
At a time when many people allow hardships to define their lives, Rajan Kumar continues to write a different story. From a child who could never walk to a teacher who has spent more than two decades guiding others towards their dreams, his journey remains a powerful reminder that the strongest spirit is often found in those who face the toughest challenges.
