The arrest of Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD) president Tej Pratap Yadav in connection with recent student protests over the alleged NEET paper leak has continued to draw political reactions, with Trinamool Congress MP Shatrughan Sinha demanding his immediate release and the withdrawal of cases registered against protesters.
In a post on social media platform X on Monday, the actor-turned-politician criticised the Bihar administration’s handling of demonstrations held in districts including Patna, Siwan and Chhapra. He described the action taken against protesters as condemnable and urged the state government to withdraw all cases filed in connection with the protests.
Sinha also called for the immediate release of Tej Pratap Yadav, who was arrested after participating in a protest in support of students agitating over alleged examination irregularities. The JJD leader was subsequently remanded to judicial custody and is currently lodged in Beur Central Jail in Patna.
Questioning the circumstances surrounding the arrest, Sinha suggested that political considerations may have influenced the action. Referring to Tej Pratap Yadav’s recent expression of support for political strategist Prashant Kishor, he asked whether the arrest was linked to the forthcoming Bankipur Assembly by-election. Sinha also praised Kishor in his post, describing him as an effective leader.
The controversy comes amid widespread protests across Bihar over the alleged NEET paper leak, during which police detained several demonstrators.
Bihar Police have maintained that action against Tej Pratap Yadav was taken in connection with cases arising from violence during the protests, including allegations of rioting and obstruction of public servants.
Meanwhile, Tej Pratap Yadav’s legal team has challenged his arrest and sought bail, while opposition parties have continued to criticise the state government’s handling of the protests and the subsequent police action.
