Trump Says Iran Sought Direct Talks After US Strikes, Signals Openness to Deal

Washington, July 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has sought direct talks with Washington following recent US military strikes, saying the sustained military campaign had pushed Tehran towards negotiations while warning that military action could resume if diplomacy fails.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while travelling to Michigan, Trump said the US operation had significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities and created conditions for renewed dialogue.

“We’ve pretty much destroyed their military. They want to meet, and we’re meeting. We’ll see what happens. There’s a chance we could make a deal,” Trump said, adding that Iran would not have sought discussions without the military pressure exerted by the United States.

According to the President, Iran requested talks both directly and through intermediaries. He said US officials were prepared to pursue diplomacy but made it clear that military operations could resume if negotiations did not produce results.

“I think there’s a good chance that something could happen. If it does, good. If it doesn’t, we go back to doing what we were doing two days ago,” Trump said.

The President also defended Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, dismissing speculation about disagreements within his administration and praising his performance during the conflict.

Addressing concerns over US military stockpiles, Trump said the country remained well equipped despite continued military support for Ukraine. He added that production of advanced defence systems, including Patriot missile batteries, was being expanded through new manufacturing facilities.

Responding to reports that Russia may have shared satellite imagery of US military bases in the Gulf with Iran, Trump said the matter would be examined and that he intended to raise the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin if necessary. He maintained that any such assistance had little practical impact, arguing that Iran’s military capabilities had already been severely degraded.

Trump also confirmed that he is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying the two leaders remain largely aligned on the Iran issue, while noting that no discussions had taken place regarding Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords.
