Sachin targets gold after entering men’s 60kg boxing quarterfinals at CWG 2026

Glasgow, July 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Indian boxer Sachin has set his sights firmly on a gold medal after securing a place in the men’s 60kg quarterfinals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.

Sachin defeated England’s William Hewitt 4-1 in a split decision in the Round of 16, delivering a composed performance to keep India’s medal hopes alive in the boxing competition.

Reflecting on his victory, Sachin said the bout was challenging but felt he maintained control for most of the contest.

“It was a tough bout. Everything I followed was going well. However, it was a bit…in the middle. Otherwise, the bout was clear,” Sachin told IANS after his win.

The Indian boxer credited his coaching team for helping him stay confident during the fight. He said the advice and encouragement from his corner boosted his morale as the contest progressed.

“After listening to the coaches, my morale only boosted,” he said.

With a medal now within reach, Sachin made it clear that merely securing a podium finish is not his target. He said he entered the Games with the ambition of winning gold and remains focused on achieving that goal.

“Now that a medal is at stake, I’ll look for gold. I had come with the mindset of winning gold only, and the aim is to get it,” he said.

Sachin also highlighted the importance of early preparation, revealing that his team had carefully analysed opponents and developed strategies well ahead of the competition.

“Preparations had started very early, as to how to play against which opponent. And that’s what’s going well,” he added.

Against Hewitt, Sachin displayed strong tactical awareness, combining accurate punches with disciplined movement to control the pace of the three-round bout. Four judges — from Kazakhstan, Canada, Mexico and Morocco — scored the contest 29-27 in his favour, while the Turkish judge gave the same score to the English boxer.

Although Sachin received a one-point deduction during the bout, it did not affect the final result. The victory has taken him one step closer to a Commonwealth Games medal, but the Indian boxer remains focused on going all the way and achieving the gold medal he came to Glasgow for.
