An IndiGo flight operating from Dubai to Mumbai with 194 people on board made a precautionary landing at Rajkot International Airport on Monday after the crew received an alert indicating smoke in the aircraft’s cargo hold.
The aircraft, operating as IndiGo flight 6E-1452 using an Airbus A321, was diverted to Rajkot after the cockpit received a smoke warning from the cargo compartment while the flight was en route to Mumbai.
Following standard aviation safety procedures, the crew decided to land at the nearest suitable airport instead of continuing the journey. Rajkot airport authorities declared a full emergency at 2.45 pm and deployed fire tenders, ambulances and emergency response teams as the aircraft approached.
The flight landed safely at Rajkot International Airport at 3.27 pm. All 194 passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft, and no injuries were reported. The emergency response was called off after the passengers disembarked.
An official said the diversion was carried out after the smoke indication and confirmed that the aircraft landed safely. The aircraft will undergo a detailed technical inspection to determine the cause of the warning.
In a statement, IndiGo said flight 6E-1452 from Dubai to Mumbai was diverted to Rajkot as a precautionary measure due to a technical issue.
“The aircraft landed safely at Rajkot, and all passengers have deboarded securely. An inspection of the aircraft is currently underway before it is cleared to resume operations,” the airline said.
IndiGo added that an alternate aircraft was being arranged to complete the passengers’ journey and that assistance was being provided to travellers during the delay.
Aviation safety procedures treat any indication of smoke or fire in a cargo compartment as a serious warning, requiring immediate precautionary action. However, a smoke alert does not always indicate an actual fire, and the exact cause can only be established after engineering checks.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the reason behind the smoke warning, and no damage to the aircraft has been reported.
