US President Donald Trump has asserted that the United States maintains a significant lead over China in the global artificial intelligence (AI) race, as his administration examines whether Chinese AI companies have improperly benefited from American technology.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while travelling to Michigan, Trump responded to questions about the administration’s review of allegations that Chinese AI developers may have used model distillation techniques to train their systems using outputs generated by advanced US AI models.
Acknowledging the intense technological competition between the two countries, Trump maintained that the United States remains firmly ahead.
“They’re looking at us, and we’re looking at them. But we’re leading China substantially in AI, and we’re going to keep it that way,” the President said.
The remarks come after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated last week that US authorities would investigate whether Chinese AI firms had gained an unfair advantage by relying on outputs from leading American AI systems instead of independently developing comparable models.
Artificial intelligence has become a key area of strategic competition between Washington and Beijing, with both nations investing heavily in advanced computing, semiconductor technology and next-generation AI research.
The Trump administration has also continued tightening export restrictions on advanced AI chips and related technologies, arguing that cutting-edge computing capabilities should not strengthen the military or intelligence capabilities of strategic competitors.
At the same time, Washington has encouraged increased domestic investment in semiconductor manufacturing, AI infrastructure, data centres and the energy resources needed to support increasingly powerful computing systems.
The growing rivalry between the United States and China in artificial intelligence extends beyond commercial innovation and increasingly encompasses defence, cybersecurity, scientific research and national economic competitiveness. The competition is also being closely watched by countries such as India, which has emerged as an important global AI talent hub and a key technology partner for the United States.
