The Congress on Monday criticised BJP MPs for welcoming former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the Parliament premises, questioning whether the ruling party considered his tenure successful despite allegations of examination irregularities and protests over the education system.
Congress MP and party General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh took to social media to target the BJP over the reception accorded to Pradhan, describing the episode as “shameful” and a “grave insult” to the country’s youth.
Ramesh alleged that instead of apologising over paper leak allegations, Pradhan had blamed students for being misled, while BJP leaders had supported him publicly. He questioned whether the BJP believed Pradhan’s work was commendable despite concerns over paper leaks, problems in the education system and police action during student protests.
The Congress leader asked the BJP to clarify the message it intended to send to students and young people by honouring the former minister.
Earlier in the day, Pradhan’s arrival at Parliament was marked by slogans from BJP and NDA MPs. As he reached the premises, supporters raised slogans in his favour, while some MPs presented him with traditional honours, including a headgear and shawl.
Pradhan resigned as Union Education Minister on Saturday following weeks of protests over alleged irregularities linked to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and related examination issues. The protests were led by the Cockroach Janta Party and other supporting groups.
Following Pradhan’s resignation, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi was assigned the additional charge of the Education Ministry.
The controversy comes amid a wider political debate over examination reforms, paper leak allegations and accountability in India’s competitive examination system.
