The Ministry of Civil Aviation on Monday informed Parliament that there has been no delay in the investigation into the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash at Ahmedabad and that the probe is progressing according to established procedures.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the ministry said investigations into major aviation accidents involve multiple factors and cannot be completed within a fixed timeframe.
“The timeline for completing a major air accident investigation cannot be predicted,” the ministry stated, adding that all possible causes and contributing factors behind the accident are being examined as part of a comprehensive inquiry.
The ministry further informed that inspection of the complete Thrust Control Module at the original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) facility is currently underway as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is conducting the probe into the crash, and the ministry reiterated that the investigation is being carried out transparently. The preliminary investigation report was released by the AAIB on July 12, 2025, and has been made available on the agency’s website.
The ministry said that, in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 13 requirements, an interim statement was published by the AAIB on June 12, 2026. The final investigation report will be released after completion of the inquiry.
The Air India AI-171 Boeing Dreamliner flight, operating from Ahmedabad to London-Gatwick, crashed shortly after take-off on June 12 last year, killing 260 people. Of these, 241 were passengers and crew members on board the aircraft, while 19 people died on the ground. One passenger survived the crash.
The AAIB’s preliminary report stated that both engines of the aircraft lost thrust after the two fuel control switches moved from the “RUN” position to the “CUTOFF” position. The report also noted that the cockpit voice recording captured one pilot asking the other about switching off the fuel control switches, with the other pilot responding that he had not done so. The switches were later moved back to the “RUN” position before the crash.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu had earlier cautioned against drawing conclusions based on preliminary findings and said the final report would provide a complete assessment of the accident.
