EU Warns China Poses Critical Long-Term Strategic Challenge Amid Rising Global Competition

Brussels, July 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The European Union has described China as a “critical long-term strategic challenge” in its latest assessment of the bloc’s security environment, warning that Beijing is expanding its influence through a combination of industrial strength, technological advancement and economic leverage.

The strategic document titled “Common Understanding – The Threats and Challenges We Face: Assessment of the EU’s Strategic Environment” said China is seeking to strengthen its position in global competition while using existing economic and technological dependencies to advance its interests.

The EU assessment highlighted what it described as China’s “asymmetric advantages” over the bloc, including trade imbalances, access to critical raw materials and technological capabilities in key sectors. It said Beijing’s ability to use these advantages as leverage contributes to the growing strategic challenge for Europe.

The document also pointed to the expanding strategic partnership between China and Russia, stating that closer ties between the two countries could further connect geopolitical developments across Europe and the Indo-Pacific region.

The EU said China’s support for Russia during the war in Ukraine has been a significant factor enabling Moscow’s efforts. It added that Beijing is expected to continue attempts to increase its influence in Europe.

According to the assessment, the broader global environment is being shaped by efforts by major powers, particularly Russia and China, to strengthen regional dominance and influence the international order. The EU said these efforts are supported by long-term investments in military capabilities, technological development and economic tools.

The document noted that China’s growing ambitions, along with the strategic rivalry between Beijing and Washington, will increasingly affect Europe’s security, economic resilience and competitiveness.

The EU stressed the need for a stronger security and defence framework, while maintaining that its efforts would complement NATO, which remains the foundation of collective defence for member states that are part of the alliance.

The assessment also underlined the importance of deeper cooperation with like-minded international partners as the EU navigates an increasingly complex global security environment.
