India’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 received another boost as weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 58kg event with a combined lift of 199kg on Monday.
The Manipur athlete lifted 87kg in the snatch and followed it up with 112kg in the clean and jerk to finish third on the podium. The result marked another significant achievement for Bindyarani, who had claimed silver in the 55kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
With the bronze, India’s overall medal count rose to six, comprising one gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal successfully defended her Commonwealth title, winning gold with an impressive total of 229kg, including 103kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk. Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau secured the silver medal after recording a total lift of 215kg.
After the snatch phase, Bindyarani was tied with England’s Eliza Pratt at 87kg. However, the Indian weightlifter produced a stronger clean and jerk performance, completing successful lifts of 110kg and 112kg before narrowly missing her final attempt at 116kg. Pratt eventually finished fourth with a total of 196kg.
Although the 199kg total was below Bindyarani’s personal best of 208kg, she displayed remarkable composure to secure a podium finish. Her opening clean and jerk attempt was initially cleared but later ruled a no-lift by the jury due to instability during the jerk phase, increasing the pressure on her subsequent attempts.
Weightlifting continued to be a strong medal-winning discipline for India in Glasgow. Earlier in the day, Gyaneshwari Yadav earned silver in the women’s 53kg category, while Mirabai Chanu had opened India’s campaign with gold and Muthupandi Raja secured silver in the men’s 65kg event on Sunday.
