In a major crackdown on cross-border smuggling networks, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police have arrested four alleged members of an illegal arms and narcotics trafficking module, recovering five sophisticated .30 bore pistols, 2.015 kg of heroin and ₹5 lakh suspected to be proceeds from drug trafficking.
The operation was carried out as part of the Punjab Government’s ongoing campaign to curb organised crime and strengthen law and order in the state.
The arrested accused have been identified as Bittu Kumar alias Bhaiya (20), a resident of Navi Abadi, Amritsar; Sahib Singh (21), originally from village Dhagana and currently residing in Fateh Singh Colony, Amritsar; Sanjeev Kumar alias Nannu (22), a resident of Pink Colony, Tarn Taran; and Sandeep Singh alias Sunny (22), a resident of village Chhiddan in Amritsar.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations indicate that the accused were actively involved in cross-border smuggling of illegal firearms and narcotics. He said further investigation is underway to identify the network’s forward and backward linkages and trace other associates connected with the alleged cartel.
Sharing details of the operation, Amritsar Commissioner of Police (CP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said police teams acted on specific intelligence to first apprehend Bittu Kumar and Sahib Singh. One .30 bore pistol was recovered during the initial operation, while two more pistols were subsequently recovered based on the disclosures made by the accused.
During interrogation, the duo allegedly revealed their involvement in cross-border heroin smuggling. Acting on the information, police arrested Sanjeev Kumar and Sandeep Singh, recovering 2.015 kg of heroin and ₹5 lakh in suspected drug money from their possession. Two additional pistols were later recovered based on the disclosure statement of Sandeep Singh, taking the total seizure to five firearms.
The CP said Bittu Kumar is already wanted in multiple criminal cases registered under the Arms Act and theft-related offences. He also noted that all four arrested accused are young individuals.
A case has been registered at Police Station Sadar Amritsar under relevant provisions of the Arms Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is in progress.
