Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has called for stronger strategic cooperation between India and the United States, saying both democracies must do more to address the growing challenge posed by China through closer collaboration in technology, clean energy and security.
In an interview with IANS, the Democratic lawmaker said the strategic competition with China represents one of the most significant geopolitical challenges of the present era and requires greater commitment from both countries.
“The China challenge is the defining challenge of our time,” Krishnamoorthi said, adding that India and the United States have the potential to strengthen their partnership by working together in emerging sectors.
He identified artificial intelligence, quantum computing, fusion energy, solar technology and security cooperation as key areas where the two nations should expand collaboration to remain globally competitive.
Stressing that technological leadership alone would not be sufficient, Krishnamoorthi said both countries must also reinforce democratic values by reducing social divisions and discrimination. Strong, inclusive democracies, he said, would be better positioned to meet long-term strategic challenges.
Commenting on concerns over alleged Chinese influence in the United States, the Congressman said there was no evidence that Beijing had interfered with the counting or tabulation of American votes. However, he cautioned that Chinese influence operations continue to be a matter of concern, often taking more subtle forms through social media campaigns and efforts to influence local opinion leaders.
Krishnamoorthi also linked America’s ability to compete with China to reforms in its immigration system. Referring to the large number of H-1B visa holders, many of whom are Indian professionals, he urged faster processing of employment-based green cards for individuals who have spent years waiting for permanent residency.
He said long-term skilled immigrants contribute significantly to innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation, and called for bipartisan efforts to modernise the immigration system while providing greater certainty to highly skilled workers.
Born in New Delhi and representing Illinois’ 8th Congressional District since 2017, Krishnamoorthi has emerged as a prominent voice in the US Congress on China policy, technology and national security.
