More than 2,000 Afghans returned to their country from Pakistan and Iran in a single day, according to a daily report released by the High Commission for Addressing Migrants’ Problems.
The report stated that 431 Afghan families comprising 2,199 individuals returned through various border crossings. Taliban deputy spokesperson Mullah Hamdullah Fitrat shared the commission’s update on Monday.
According to the report, the largest number of returnees entered Afghanistan through the Torkham crossing, where 337 families consisting of 1,769 people crossed back into the country.
At the Spin Boldak crossing, 39 Afghan families comprising 213 people returned, while 42 families with 167 members entered through the Pul-i-Abrisham crossing. The report also mentioned that 294 other travellers crossed into Afghanistan through different routes.
Additionally, 13 families comprising 50 people returned through the Islam Qala crossing, according to the report.
The movement of Afghan refugees back to the country comes amid concerns raised by international rights organisations over the treatment of Afghan nationals in neighbouring countries.
Last month, Amnesty International urged the international community to halt what it described as unlawful expulsions of Afghan refugees and called for protection of their rights under international humanitarian and human rights standards.
The rights organisation said many Afghan refugees face challenges including arbitrary arrests and family separations in host countries, while returnees continue to face serious humanitarian difficulties inside Afghanistan.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have also repeatedly called for refugee returns to be safe, voluntary and dignified, while urging greater international support for returning Afghan families.
