Indian equity markets ended a five-session losing streak on Monday, with benchmark indices posting strong gains after a sharp fall in crude oil prices eased concerns over prolonged geopolitical tensions.
The BSE Sensex climbed 776.29 points, or 1.02 per cent, to close at 76,835.78, while the NSE Nifty gained 229.40 points, or 0.96 per cent, to settle at 23,995.95, coming close to reclaiming the 24,000 level.
Market sentiment improved after the United States and Iran paused military strikes, reducing fears of further escalation and supporting global risk appetite. The decline in crude oil prices also boosted investor confidence, particularly for India, which is among the world’s largest crude oil importers.
Analysts said sustained movement above the 24,000 mark could strengthen the market’s upward momentum. They added that the Nifty may move towards the 24,250-24,300 range if it maintains gains, while failure to hold the level could lead to a correction towards 23,800.
Among Nifty stocks, Eternal, InterGlobe Aviation and Infosys were among the top performers, supporting the broader market recovery.
The rally extended beyond large-cap stocks, with mid and small-cap indices also recording gains. The Nifty MidCap index rose 1.11 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index advanced 1.31 per cent.
Sectoral performance remained largely positive, with IT, Media and Realty stocks leading the gains. The Nifty Realty, Nifty Pharma and Nifty Metal indices also recovered after three consecutive sessions of losses. However, the Nifty Oil & Gas index remained relatively subdued despite the broader market strength.
Market experts attributed the rebound to easing global tensions, lower crude prices, a stronger rupee, gains in technology stocks and positive corporate earnings sentiment.
Analysts also noted that the Indian rupee has strengthened against global peers, supported by central bank measures and improved foreign investor sentiment amid favourable global market conditions.
