The government on Monday said E20 petrol provides better acceleration, improved ride quality and nearly 30 per cent lower carbon emissions compared to E10 fuel, while asserting that studies have found no evidence of engine damage, corrosion or reduced vehicle life due to the higher ethanol blend.
Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi said E20 fuel enables cleaner and more complete combustion, resulting in near-zero particulate matter emissions and contributing to improved urban air quality.
According to the ministry’s response, extensive laboratory studies and field trials conducted by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Indian Oil Corporation, Indian Institute of Petroleum and automobile manufacturers examined various parameters, including engine durability, drivability, starting performance, corrosion resistance, material compatibility, emissions and fuel efficiency before the introduction of E20 petrol.
The government said these evaluations confirmed that E20 fuel is safe for use when vehicles operate under prescribed standards. It added that assessments of older vehicles did not show any significant impact on performance, abnormal wear and tear or component durability due to the use of E20 petrol.
Citing field-level data, the ministry said a leading automobile manufacturer serviced 2.84 crore vehicles during the financial year 2025-26, including around 1.5 crore vehicles that were not originally certified for E20 compatibility. The company reported no cases of ethanol-related corrosion, abnormal wear or reduction in component life.
The government also said major two-wheeler manufacturers and other original equipment manufacturers have reported similar findings after monitoring millions of vehicles running on E20 fuel.
The ministry added that ARAI has reaffirmed that vehicles undergo rigorous testing and validation based on international standards before being introduced for consumer use.
