Behind Every Indian Medal at CWG 2026 Stands a Coach’s Sacrifice, Says IOA President P.T. Usha

Glasgow, July 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha has highlighted the crucial role of coaches in India’s performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, saying every medal won by the country reflects years of dedication and sacrifice by those working behind the scenes.

India’s campaign at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games has already seen notable achievements, including a medal in para powerlifting and record-breaking performances by weightlifters Mirabai Chanu and Rishikanta Singh Chanambam. Usha said these successes are the result of sustained efforts by athletes as well as their coaching teams.

“As an athlete, I have always believed that behind every great performance is a great coach. Coaches spend years nurturing talent, building confidence and preparing athletes for their biggest moments,” Usha said in an IOA statement.

She added that while coaches may not receive the same recognition as athletes who stand on the podium, every medal carries the contribution of their guidance, planning and commitment.

Coaches play roles extending beyond technical training, including designing training schedules, managing recovery, analysing performances, developing strategies and providing mental support during high-pressure competitions.

India’s weightlifting performances in Glasgow have once again underlined the importance of the athlete-coach partnership. Chief coach Vijay Sharma, who has guided Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu through several international campaigns, continues to play a key role in strengthening India’s presence in the sport. Assistant coaches and support staff have also contributed to athletes’ preparation and performance.

In athletics, chief coach Radhakrishnan Nair leads a team supporting athletes across sprinting, distance events, jumps and throws. Top performers, including Neeraj Chopra and Murali Sreeshankar, continue to benefit from close coordination with their personal coaching teams.

India’s coaching network also extends across swimming, boxing and para sports. Coaches provide technical expertise, tactical planning and psychological support to help athletes perform at the highest level.

The IOA said it has ensured that athletes competing in different disciplines receive support from experienced coaches and technical staff throughout the Games. The association views strong coaching systems as essential not only for medal success but also for athlete development, confidence and long-term performance.
