In a significant interim relief for Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, founded by Samajwadi Party leader and former MP Azam Khan, the Uttar Pradesh government’s Divisional Commissioner has stayed the demolition order issued against 38 buildings on the university campus.
An official said on Monday that the Divisional Commissioner has directed the Rampur district administration to maintain status quo until the next hearing, temporarily halting any demolition action.
The dispute began after the Rampur Development Authority (RDA) alleged that 38 of the university’s 40 buildings had been constructed without the required approvals. The authority had directed the university to remove the structures within a stipulated period, warning that the district administration would carry out the demolition if the order was not complied with.
The proposed action had sparked protests by the Samajwadi Party last week. Party leaders and workers staged demonstrations in Ayodhya against the RDA’s order, describing the move as unjustified and seeking intervention from the President of India.
The protesters submitted a memorandum through the District Magistrate, urging that all stakeholders be given an opportunity to present their case in accordance with legal procedures before any irreversible action is taken.
The protest was led by former Uttar Pradesh minister and former MLA Tej Narayan Pandey, who accused the state government of targeting the university for political reasons. He argued that instead of demolishing educational infrastructure, authorities should allow the institution to rectify any technical or documentation-related deficiencies in compliance with the law.
Pandey also questioned the government’s approach towards educational institutions, stating that any shortcomings related to building plans or official approvals should be addressed through due process rather than demolition.
The stay order provides temporary relief to the university while the matter remains under consideration by the competent authority.
