Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said Iran would be the top priority during his upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump, as the two leaders prepare to discuss key regional and security issues amid continuing tensions in West Asia.
Before departing for the United States with his wife, Sara Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister said the meeting would cover a wide range of subjects, with Israel’s security remaining the central focus.
“In our meeting, we will discuss all the issues on the table, with Iran at the forefront. Our goal is clear: to safeguard Israel’s security, strengthen its power, and expand the circle of peace around us,” Netanyahu said.
Describing Trump as a close friend, Netanyahu noted that this would be their eighth meeting since Trump began his second term as US President. He said he was travelling to the US with a commitment to strengthening Israel’s security, national interests and future.
The Israeli Prime Minister also said he would pay his last respects to late US Senator Lindsey Graham, whom he described as one of Israel’s strongest supporters and a close personal friend.
“I am also setting out for an additional purpose: to pay last respects to our friend, a true friend of mine and of the State of Israel — Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest friends of the State of Israel of all time,” he said.
Netanyahu’s visit comes against the backdrop of renewed tensions in West Asia following recent military exchanges involving Iran and the United States.
A day before his departure, Netanyahu held discussions with his Cabinet and also spoke by telephone with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to Netanyahu, the conversation included developments relating to the International Criminal Court (ICC), including the recent departure of ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan. He said Rubio reiterated Washington’s intention to take a firm position against the court, alleging that it undermines the sovereignty and security interests of democratic nations.
Netanyahu said he viewed the US position as a positive development and expressed hope that similar support would emerge internationally.
