Bihar Govt Withdraws Criminal Cases Against Students Booked During NEET-UG Protests

Complete News Story

Patna, July 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

In a significant relief for students involved in the NEET-UG protest movement, the Bihar government has announced the withdrawal of all criminal cases registered against students who participated in demonstrations over alleged examination irregularities.

The Home Department issued an official order stating that all FIRs registered up to 6 p.m. on July 26 in connection with the statewide protests will be withdrawn. The government also clarified that no further legal action will be initiated against students for their participation in the agitation.

According to the notification issued by Kshtranil Singh, Special Secretary, Home Department, the decision was taken following a review conducted on the directions of the Chief Minister. The government said it had adopted a humanitarian approach to ensure that the education and future careers of students are not adversely affected.

The protests erupted across Bihar amid allegations of irregularities and concerns over the NEET-UG examination, with demonstrations taking place in several districts. In some locations, clashes broke out, leading to police action and registration of cases involving allegations such as unlawful assembly, obstruction of public servants, damage to public property and related offences.

A senior government official said the administration considers students to be the nation’s future and does not want pending criminal proceedings to affect their academic prospects. All eligible cases registered within the specified period will therefore be withdrawn with immediate effect.

The decision has been welcomed by several student organisations and parents. Student leaders expressed hope that the government would now focus on strengthening transparency and credibility in the examination system.

Reacting to the announcement, AISA All India President Neha Bora, who was part of a delegation that met Bihar Director General of Police Vinay Kumar, urged authorities to ensure the notification is implemented in full. She appealed for the release of all detained students and withdrawal of all eligible FIRs covered under the government order.

The delegation also included Karakat MLA Arun Singh, RYA National President Ajit Kushwaha, Shiv Prakash Ranjan and former MLA and CPI(ML) leader Kumar Parvez.

The Bihar government has also appealed to students to concentrate on their studies, avoid violent protests and share constructive suggestions for improving the examination system and preventing future irregularities.
