Actor Lisa Ray has shared a heartfelt reflection on how her journey through cancer and perimenopause has reshaped her perspective on ageing, self-worth and personal well-being, saying the experiences taught her that life is precious and reinforced the importance of listening to her body.
In a social media post on Monday, Lisa shared a series of workout photographs along with a candid message about embracing change with age. She said every passing decade strips away societal expectations and misconceptions, particularly those imposed on women.
Reflecting on the pressures women often face, Lisa wrote that society teaches them to “stay small to be loved,” tie their value to physical appearance and believe that saying “no” makes them difficult. However, she said her own experiences had led her to the opposite conclusion.
“The older I get, the more my body asks for strength instead of punishment, rest instead of guilt, curiosity instead of criticism,” she wrote.
Lisa said her diagnosis with cancer taught her that life is not guaranteed, while perimenopause has reminded her that the body is constantly evolving. Rather than leaving her bitter, she said both experiences have made her unapologetic about prioritising her health and inner voice.
She also referred to the internet trend “spitemaxxing,” saying she interprets it as tuning out external opinions and finally feeling at home in her own skin. “Cancer taught me life isn’t guaranteed. Perimenopause taught me patience isn’t either. Both taught me to choose myself,” she wrote.
Lisa Ray was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare cancer of the plasma cells, in 2009 at the age of 37. After undergoing chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, she announced in 2010 that she had achieved remission. Since then, she has consistently advocated for cancer awareness, early diagnosis and mental health.
A former model, Lisa made her acting debut with the Tamil film Nethaji in 1994 before gaining wider recognition with Kasoor. She has also earned international acclaim for films including Water, I Can’t Think Straight and The World Unseen, and has appeared in recent projects such as Four More Shots Please!.
