India’s Gulveer Singh produced a remarkable finishing burst to claim the silver medal in the men’s 10,000 metres at the Commonwealth Games 2026, becoming the first Indian athlete to win a medal in the event in the history of the Games.
The 28-year-old distance runner clocked 27:49.78, unleashing a powerful sprint over the final lap to secure second place behind Australia’s Ky Robinson, who won gold in 27:48.93. David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man finished third with a time of 27:50.28, while Kenya’s Edwin Kurgat narrowly missed the podium in 27:50.98.
Gulveer stayed with the leading pack during the early stages of the race before dropping to ninth as the pace intensified beyond the halfway mark. Showing patience and tactical awareness, he steadily regained ground over the closing kilometre, moved into third entering the bell lap and then delivered an outstanding final surge to overtake his rivals and clinch a historic silver.
Although the winning time was well outside his personal best and national record of 27:00.22, set in 2025, the medal adds another milestone to Gulveer’s rapidly growing international career.
The Commonwealth Games silver follows his bronze medal in the 10,000m at the Asian Games and his double gold-medal triumph in the 5,000m and 10,000m at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea.
A Naib Subedar in the Grenadiers Regiment of the Indian Army, Gulveer hails from Sirsa village in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district. He began his running journey on village roads and farm trails while preparing for Army recruitment before emerging as one of India’s finest long-distance runners.
Gulveer also holds the national records in the 3,000m and 5,000m, underlining his status as one of the country’s most accomplished endurance athletes.
