The United States and Saudi Arabia carried out coordinated precision airstrikes against Iran-backed groups in eastern Iraq after a series of drone attacks targeting American military personnel and Saudi energy infrastructure, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Tuesday.
According to CENTCOM, the joint operation was launched in response to more than 30 drone attacks carried out over the previous 72 hours, which it alleged were directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The strikes targeted logistics hubs and weapons facilities used by Iran-aligned groups operating in eastern Iraq.
CENTCOM stated that the attacks against US forces were unsuccessful and warned that further military action could follow if assaults on American personnel and regional allies continue. However, it did not identify the specific groups targeted, disclose the exact locations of the strikes, or provide details regarding casualties or damage.
The command also claimed that Iran-backed militias in Iraq had carried out more than 600 attacks on US citizens and facilities between February and April 2026, urging the IRGC and affiliated groups to halt such operations.
The military action came amid heightened tensions across the Middle East. Earlier in the day, CENTCOM said Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles toward US forces stationed in the region in what it described as a surprise attack. It claimed that all incoming missiles were successfully intercepted, though no details were provided on the number of missiles fired, the intended targets, or the interception systems used.
Separately, CENTCOM said more than 20 US Navy warships remain deployed across the Middle East to support ongoing operations, including enforcement of what it termed a naval blockade against Iran. As of July 28, it said 18 commercial vessels had been redirected, while two were disabled and another two boarded to ensure compliance. No additional details about the vessels or their cargo were disclosed.
