Meta has acknowledged that the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s video from Facebook was the result of an error and confirmed that the content has since been restored.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, a Meta spokesperson said, “The content was removed in error and has since been restored.”
The development came as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) summoned the global heads of Meta and Instagram to explain the brief blocking of the Prime Minister’s video on the social media platform.
The video, released on July 23, featured Prime Minister Modi’s first address to Generation Z during the 36-day student protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). In the address, the Prime Minister said stricter measures to curb examination paper leaks would be announced at the next Union Cabinet meeting.
The video had attracted millions of views before users reported that access to it was briefly restricted on Facebook during the early hours of July 28. Initial reports suggested the restriction may have followed what appeared to be a legal request. However, Meta later clarified that the removal was inadvertent and restored the content.
The address had also generated significant engagement across social media platforms. According to the source material, Prime Minister Modi’s Instagram account gained nearly one million followers overnight after the video was posted, taking his total following to around 101 million.
The source material further stated that the Prime Minister remains the world’s most-followed political leader on social media, with a digital audience exceeding that of several other prominent global leaders.
The incident has drawn official attention, with MeitY seeking an explanation from Meta over the temporary unavailability of the Prime Minister’s video.
