Three Women Injured in Paris Knife Attack; Suspect in Custody as Authorities Probe Motive

Three women were injured in a knife attack in northwestern Paris on Monday, prompting an ongoing investigation into the motive behind the assault as French authorities examine whether it has any terrorist links.

The attack occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time when a man armed with two kitchen knives allegedly attacked pedestrians on a street in the French capital. Emergency services rushed the victims to hospital, with two reported to be in critical condition.

The suspect was overpowered and arrested at the scene by an off-duty police officer before he could flee.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the suspect had provided only a self-declared identity and was making incoherent statements during his arrest. He urged caution against drawing premature conclusions about the motive behind what he described as an extremely violent attack.

According to media reports, France’s National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) is monitoring the case while investigators assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Videos circulating on social media appear to show the suspect making a religious statement while being restrained. In one widely shared clip, he is heard saying, “It is Allah who commanded me.” Authorities have not confirmed whether the statement reflects the motive behind the attack, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The incident comes a day after a deadly attack in Berlin, Germany, in which a van drove into a crowd before the suspect allegedly attacked people with a bladed weapon near the city’s Christopher Street Day pride parade. One woman was killed and 29 others were injured. German authorities later shot dead the suspect after he reportedly charged at police officers with a weapon. Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt subsequently said the Berlin attack was suspected to have been an Islamist terrorist act.

French authorities have not announced any formal charges or confirmed the motive in the Paris attack as investigations continue.
