Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon on Saturday welcomed the Union Cabinet’s decision to extend the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme for another five years, calling it a major step towards strengthening farmers’ financial security.
Dhillon said the approval of a ₹3.15 lakh crore allocation for continuing the scheme from 2026-27 to 2030-31 reflects the Centre’s commitment towards the welfare of farmers.
He said the extension would ensure that farmers in Punjab and across the country continue receiving financial assistance of ₹6,000 annually in three equal instalments directly into their bank accounts. According to him, the support would help farmers manage agricultural expenses, reduce financial risks and contribute to the rural economy.
Dhillon said PM-KISAN, launched in February 2019, has emerged as one of the largest Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) programmes in the country, with more than ₹4.7 lakh crore already transferred to farmers through 23 instalments.
Highlighting other measures taken by the Centre, he said the government has ensured direct procurement of paddy and wheat at Minimum Support Prices (MSP), with payments transferred directly to farmers’ accounts.
He also pointed to subsidies on fertilisers such as urea and DAP, saying the government has taken steps to ensure affordable availability of agricultural inputs despite fluctuations in global prices.
Dhillon said the Union Government’s focus remains on improving farmers’ income, promoting sustainable agriculture and strengthening the rural economy.
He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for continuing policies aimed at supporting farmers and improving their economic condition.
