At least three people were killed and two others injured in a shooting near an In-N-Out restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Saturday, local authorities said.
The shooting began inside the restaurant shortly before 2:30 p.m. local time, according to city officials. Details about the circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear.
The Twin Falls Police Department issued an alert after responding to reports of an active shooter situation near the restaurant and urged residents and visitors to avoid the area to allow emergency teams and law enforcement personnel to carry out operations.
At a news conference on Saturday night, Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks confirmed that there had been fatalities but did not initially provide the exact number of victims. He said several injured people were receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The suspected shooter was found dead, Hicks said, but authorities were still working to determine the person’s identity and the possible motive behind the attack.
Roads around the area, including a nearby bridge, were closed as police continued their investigation. Authorities advised motorists to take alternate routes and avoid restricted areas.
Officials have not released further details regarding the identity of the shooter, the number of weapons involved or whether any additional suspects were connected to the incident.
The shooting comes weeks after another deadly incident in the US, when two people were killed and five others injured during a shooting at Seattle Center while the Bite of Seattle food festival was underway.
