Indian triple jumper Praveen Chithravel has set his sights on winning gold at the upcoming Asian Games after securing a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026, though he admitted that his performance left him slightly disappointed.
Competing in difficult weather conditions in Glasgow, the 25-year-old athlete produced a best jump of 16.58 metres to finish second behind Jamaica’s Jordan Scott.
Reflecting on his achievement, Chithravel said winning a medal at a major international event was important for him, especially after narrowly missing out on a podium finish at the previous Commonwealth Games.
“I am happy to win the silver, especially after finishing fourth last time, though performance-wise, I’m still a little disappointed,” he told IANS.
Chithravel dedicated the medal to his family, coaches and friends, crediting his father as his biggest source of motivation.
“My father is my biggest inspiration to do well; he has always encouraged me and reminded me of my potential,” he said.
The national record holder had failed to qualify for the final round at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo after recording a best effort of 16.74 metres. However, he bounced back by winning the inter-state athletics championships title in June with a jump of 16.92 metres, securing qualification for the Asian Games.
Chithravel said his next goal is to upgrade his Asian Games medal from bronze to gold. He is scheduled to travel to the Czech Republic for a two-week training camp before returning to India and heading to Japan for the continental event.
Chithravel holds the Indian men’s triple jump national record of 17.37 metres, which he first set in Cuba in 2023 and later equalled at the Federation Cup in Kochi.
