Sutapa Sikdar, writer and wife of late actor Irrfan Khan, has shared a message for Gen Z, urging the younger generation to move beyond traditional abusive language and adopt more thoughtful ways of expressing anger or disagreement.
In a social media post shared on Sunday, Sutapa said she supports the younger generation’s willingness to raise their voice against issues they believe are wrong. However, she pointed out that the use of gender-based abuses remains unchanged across generations.
Sharing her thoughts on Instagram Stories, Sutapa wrote that while she admires Gen Z’s courage and activism, she was disappointed that abusive expressions targeting women continue to be used.
She highlighted that many Hindi abuses continue to involve references to women’s private parts, describing the practice as outdated and reflective of patriarchal thinking.
Sutapa encouraged young people to challenge every problematic social practice, including the language used during conflicts or protests. She said that if a generation wants to bring meaningful change, it should also examine the words it uses while expressing itself.
She further appealed to Gen Z to avoid using derogatory phrases against women and suggested that people should find more creative and respectful ways of communicating.
Ending her note on a lighter tone, Sutapa asked the younger generation to come up with new expressions rather than repeating traditional abuses that insult women.
Sutapa Sikdar, who was married to Irrfan Khan, has often used social media to share personal reflections and views on social issues.
