A report has alleged that Western media organisations have historically underreported incidents of alleged state violence in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, claiming that geopolitical considerations have often influenced international coverage of Pakistan’s internal affairs.
The report said victims of alleged repression in these regions represent the consequences of a global focus on maintaining “stability” over addressing concerns related to rights and freedoms.
Citing recent developments in PoK, including protests in areas such as Rawalakot, Mirpur and Kotli, the report claimed that demonstrations have received limited international attention despite allegations of violence by Pakistani security forces.
It alleged that coverage by several Western media outlets of the situation in PoK has been inadequate compared with their extensive reporting on other regional developments.
The report argued that Pakistan’s strategic importance, including its role as a major non-NATO ally of the United States, has influenced how Western governments and institutions engage with Islamabad.
According to the report, Pakistan’s military establishment has retained influence over domestic affairs and foreign policy, while international actors have often prioritised strategic interests over concerns related to democratic institutions and civil liberties.
It further claimed that similar patterns of alleged suppression have been observed in regions including Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where security operations and political unrest have remained contentious issues.
The report described Pakistan as a state heavily dependent on external support and strategic partnerships, arguing that this has contributed to international reluctance in addressing allegations of internal coercion.
The report’s claims come amid continuing debates over media coverage, foreign policy priorities and human rights concerns in conflict-affected regions of South Asia.
