A political row over the Opposition’s protest in Parliament regarding alleged irregularities in the management of offerings at the Ram temple in Ayodhya spilled onto the streets of Bhopal on Saturday, with Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal workers staging a demonstration against the move.
Hundreds of activists gathered at Vyapam Square and marched towards Link Road, alleging that the Opposition had hurt Hindu sentiments through its protest in Parliament. Police had deployed barricades to prevent the march from moving ahead.
A brief confrontation took place when some protesters attempted to cross the barricades. The situation was brought under control by police, and the demonstration later continued peacefully.
The protesters raised slogans against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Independent MP Pappu Yadav. They also smeared cow dung on an effigy of Rahul Gandhi before setting it on fire.
VHP Madhya Bharat Provincial Co-Minister Jitendra Chauhan accused the Opposition of disrespecting Hindu faith through its Parliament demonstration.
“The way the protest was held by dressing as a saint and allegedly placing a picture of Ram Lalla on the ground has hurt the sentiments of crores of Hindus,” Chauhan said, adding that those who could not stop the construction of the Ram temple were now attempting to defame Lord Ram.
Bhopal BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma also criticised the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the Opposition had repeatedly shown disrespect towards Lord Ram and Hindu beliefs.
The protest followed a demonstration by Opposition MPs during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, where they sought transparency and an inquiry into the handling of offerings made by devotees at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
While BJP leaders and Hindu organisations accused the Opposition of insulting religious sentiments, Opposition members maintained that their protest was aimed at demanding accountability and transparency in the management of temple offerings.
Police remained deployed at the site, and the protesters dispersed after the demonstration concluded.
