India’s record-breaking performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where the country secured 39 medals including 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze, highlighted the growing strength of its high-performance sports ecosystem.
The medal haul was not only a result of athletes delivering on the biggest stage but also reflected years of structured planning, scientific training and coordinated support involving the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), National Sports Federations (NSFs) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Ahead of the Glasgow Games, athletes received access to specialised coaching, sports science support, physiotherapy, nutrition programmes and international exposure opportunities. Through TOPS, several medal prospects benefited from personalised assistance, overseas training camps and support from elite experts.
National Sports Federations also contributed by arranging competitive exposure, appointing coaching teams and conducting targeted training camps to ensure athletes entered the Games in peak physical and mental condition.
The Indian Olympic Association played a key role behind the scenes by managing operational requirements and ensuring that athletes remained focused on competition. From accommodation and transportation to accreditation, training arrangements and emergency support, the IOA worked to minimise challenges for the Indian contingent.
The smooth support system was especially valuable for young athletes making their Commonwealth Games debut, helping them adapt quickly to the international environment.
India’s Glasgow campaign also reflected the transformation of the country’s sporting structure over the past decade. Increasingly, success is being driven by a collective approach involving athletes, coaches, administrators, sports scientists and support teams rather than depending only on individual talent.
The performance showcased India’s expanding competitiveness across multiple disciplines, with emerging athletes making their mark and experienced competitors delivering under pressure.
With major events such as the Asian Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics ahead, India’s Commonwealth Games campaign has strengthened confidence that sustained investment in elite sport can deliver consistent international success.
