Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said students across the country do not need “forgiveness” from the government but accountability and reassurance over issues related to examination paper leaks, cancelled exams and uncertainty surrounding their future.
His remarks came in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statement about forgiving young protesters who had criticised him and his late mother. In a video shared on Instagram, Modi had described such protesters as misguided youngsters who required guidance.
Reacting to the statement on X, Rahul Gandhi said the Prime Minister should acknowledge the difficulties faced by students due to failures in the examination system.
“India’s students do not need his forgiveness. They are owed his apology,” Rahul Gandhi wrote, urging the government to take steps to strengthen the examination process.
The Congress leader said students are encouraged to work hard and compete honestly, but their efforts are often affected when examinations are cancelled or compromised.
He also highlighted the emotional impact of education-related pressures on families, sharing photographs of his interactions with students and parents who had faced such difficulties.
“Nothing is more painful than seeing a parent grieve their child,” he said, adding that every young life lost leaves behind a grieving family and raises serious questions about the education system.
Rahul Gandhi further alleged that the Prime Minister had not directly addressed the concerns of students and families affected by examination-related issues.
He said years of preparation could be disrupted when exams are cancelled or irregularities occur, leaving students uncertain about their careers.
The Congress leader called on the government to accept responsibility for shortcomings in the examination system and assure students that corrective steps would be taken.
