Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has praised young badminton player Tanvi Sharma after her historic Taipei Open title win, saying the teenager has all the qualities needed to become a special player.
Tanvi, 17, created history on Sunday by winning her maiden BWF World Tour Super 300 title after defeating Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Linh in straight games. She dominated the final with a 21-16, 21-16 victory in 36 minutes, becoming the youngest player across all categories to win the Taipei Open.
Congratulating the youngster, Sindhu said Tanvi’s talent, shot-making ability and confidence against top opponents have been visible for years, adding that experience and consistency were the only areas she needed to strengthen.
“Couldn’t be prouder of this girl. I’ve been saying for years that Tanvi has all the ingredients to become a very special player,” Sindhu wrote on X.
She added that the Taipei Open victory was only the beginning of Tanvi’s journey and encouraged her to continue working hard, believing in herself and remaining determined for greater achievements.
The title win places Tanvi alongside legendary Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal as only the second Indian women’s singles player to win the Taipei Open. The achievement also ended India’s 17-year wait for a women’s singles title at the tournament.
Tanvi’s victory marked India’s third Taipei Open title overall, with the previous triumph coming in 2009 when the mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and V Diju won the championship.
The young shuttler had earlier impressed with a runner-up finish at the US Open and second-place finishes at the Odisha Masters and Guwahati Masters Super 100 events.
With this achievement, Tanvi became only the fourth Indian women’s singles player after Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and Devika Sihag to win a BWF Super 300 or higher-level title. She is also the third-youngest player globally to claim a BWF Super 300 crown.
