Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Saturday urged the Government of India to immediately reopen the Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, saying it was a sacred route connected with the faith and sentiments of millions of Sikhs across the world.
Majithia described the corridor as a “corridor of peace and brotherhood” and said it should not be viewed through the lens of trade or politics but as a religious pathway leading to the holy shrine of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
He said the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji centred on love, harmony, selfless service and Sarbat Da Bhala (welfare of all humanity). Keeping the corridor closed, he added, was causing pain to devotees who wished to pay obeisance at the historic shrine.
Responding to concerns that reopening the corridor could affect the security situation, Majithia said Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s message was never based on conflict or division but on peace, unity and universal welfare.
“The Kartarpur Corridor is a path of faith, devotion and prayer. Every pilgrim who travels through it seeks blessings for humanity and world peace,” he said, adding that the issue should be considered from the perspective of religious sentiments rather than political considerations.
Majithia said if trade and essential activities with Pakistan could continue through other routes, the Kartarpur Corridor should not be treated as a commercial passage. He emphasised that its significance was spiritual and linked to the final resting place of Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Kartarpur Sahib.
Recalling the opening of the corridor in 2019, Majithia said the initiative was welcomed by the Sikh community worldwide and fulfilled a long-standing aspiration of devotees. He said the sentiments that led to its opening remained unchanged and Sikhs continued to seek its reopening.
“The Kartarpur Corridor is not a subject of political debate. It represents the faith of millions and the universal message of Sarbat Da Bhala given by Guru Nanak Dev Ji,” Majithia said, urging the Centre to take an early decision.
