Four years after losing a leg in a life-changing accident, Shubham Juyal scripted an inspiring comeback by winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026, turning a period of despair into a story of determination and resilience.
On August 1, 2022, Juyal was lying in an intensive care unit after undergoing an above-knee amputation. The accident had shattered his dream of becoming an Indian Army officer, a goal he had been pursuing after clearing the written examination and preparing for his Services Selection Board (SSB) interview.
“Four years ago, on August 1, I was in the ICU. I had an above-knee amputation, and at that time I was completely hopeless and aimless,” Juyal told IANS while recalling his journey.
He said he never imagined that within four years he would compete at the Commonwealth Games and win a silver medal.
Juyal, who was 26 when the accident occurred, said his only ambition before the tragedy was to join the Army. The sudden turn of events left him uncertain about his future.
A major change came in 2023 when he joined the Army Paralympic Node, where he met Subedar Major RK Singh Rawat. With guidance from his coach and support from the Indian Army, family and friends, Juyal began his journey in para-athletics despite having no prior experience in the sport.
“I didn’t even know the zero of shot put,” he said, recalling his early days in the discipline. He credited his coach for teaching him the fundamentals and motivating him to continue.
The Commonwealth Games silver medal has now strengthened Juyal’s ambitions. He said the achievement is only the beginning of a bigger journey and aims to win a gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games.
Juyal’s journey from an ICU bed to an international sporting podium has emerged as a symbol of courage, perseverance and the power of determination.
