Police complaints have been filed in Varanasi against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav over a skit staged at the Parliament premises on alleged irregularities in donations made to the Ram Temple, with complainants accusing the leaders of hurting religious sentiments.
The complaints were submitted by seers and lawyers at police stations in Varanasi on Saturday. The complainants alleged that the act, performed on Friday, offended the religious sentiments of Hindus.
The controversy began after Purnia MP Pappu Yadav appeared dressed as a monk at the Parliament complex and enacted a scene related to allegations of misuse of donations made to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Several opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were seen participating in the act.
Jagadguru Balak Das Devacharya, head priest of Patalpuri Math, said the performance had insulted the saffron robe, the saint community and Lord Ram. He said a complaint had been filed against the leaders involved and demanded legal action.
Kashi Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Banswal said police had received a written complaint after videos of the incident surfaced on social media. He said the complaint currently mentioned the name of Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav.
Meanwhile, lawyers in Varanasi also staged a protest against the MP and submitted a complaint seeking action against Pappu Yadav and Rahul Gandhi.
Advocate Vineet Kumar Singh said the complaint was filed over what they described as an insult to Sanatan Dharma during the Parliament premises protest. He added that the complaint had been submitted to Cantonment police authorities seeking registration of a case.
A separate complaint was also filed at Jahangirpuri Police Station in Delhi by petitioner Surya Maithil, accusing Pappu Yadav of hurting religious sentiments during the protest.
The incident has also triggered protests by seers and Hindu organisations, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad, in several parts of the country.
