The Telangana government has relieved Hyderabad Cyber Crime Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) V. Aravind Babu of his duties, days after cases were registered against Meta India head Arun Srinivas and several Facebook and Instagram accounts over alleged objectionable content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to sources, Aravind Babu has been directed to report to the State Police Headquarters. The action came after the state government reportedly reviewed the manner in which the FIRs were registered in connection with alleged derogatory posts during the recent Cockroach Janta Party protests over the NEET paper leak issue.
The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police had on Thursday registered cases against Arun Srinivas, along with several social media accounts, for allegedly circulating morphed and objectionable videos and images of the Prime Minister on Facebook and Instagram.
The FIRs were filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act following complaints by businessman and BJP supporter S. Aravind Reddy and Telangana BJP activist T. Saikiran Goud.
The complainants alleged that they came across digitally manipulated videos and images portraying the Prime Minister in an obscene, derogatory and misleading manner while browsing Instagram. Saikiran Goud also submitted a list of 20 Facebook and Instagram links and sought action against Meta for hosting the alleged content.
Meanwhile, the Telangana BJP criticised the government’s decision to relieve the DCP, calling it a “vindictive” action.
State BJP president N. Ramchander Rao alleged that the officer was punished for performing his duty and registering cases according to the law. He said the party condemned the move and accused the Congress government of targeting an official for acting against alleged offensive content.
The Telangana BJP, in a post on X, also alleged that the action against the cyber crime officer would weaken law enforcement and encourage misuse of social media platforms.
The state government has not issued an official statement explaining the reasons behind the transfer of the DCP.
