AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab Bhupesh Baghel on Saturday urged Congress workers to strengthen booth-level organisation and unite to defeat the Aam Aadmi Party, BJP and Akali factions in the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections.
Addressing the party’s ‘Har Booth Mazboot’ programme in Patiala district, Baghel said the responsibility of Congress leaders and workers was to ensure victory for the party, while decisions regarding the Chief Minister and ministers would be taken by the Congress high command, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
Baghel said elections in Punjab could be held earlier than scheduled, while even the regular February timeline was not far away. He stressed that effective booth-level management would be crucial for electoral success.
“Once the party becomes strong at the booth level, nobody can defeat it,” he said, while calling booth workers the frontline force of the organisation.
He said Punjab could witness a multi-cornered contest involving the Congress, AAP, BJP and different Akali groups. He asked party workers to counter what he described as misinformation campaigns by the BJP and AAP and highlight the Congress’ achievements along with the shortcomings of the governments at the Centre and in Punjab.
Targeting the AAP government, Baghel alleged that law and order in the state had deteriorated and people were living under fear. He claimed incidents of extortion and violence had increased, putting public safety at risk.
Referring to the farmers’ agitation, Baghel accused the BJP’s social media campaign of defaming Punjabis by labelling protesters with terms such as anti-national and Khalistani. He also highlighted the importance of social media, citing recent political developments where online campaigns had influenced public discourse.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring appealed for unity within the party and said his wish was to see a Congress Chief Minister take oath while he watched from the audience.
Warring said senior leaders, including Partap Singh Bajwa, Charanjit Singh Channi, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Brahm Mohindra, were more experienced and capable than him. He added that all senior leaders would soon appear together on a common platform.
Expressing confidence ahead of the Assembly elections, Warring said Congress would improve upon its performance after winning seven of the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab.
Several senior Congress leaders and office-bearers attended the programme, including Brahm Mohindra, Randeep Nabha, Hardayal Kamboj, Rajinder Singh and other party functionaries.
