Five people, including three women, were killed in a devastating road accident after their car rammed into the rear of a stationary lorry on the Pollachi-Udumalai National Highway near Nallampalli in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district on Sunday.
According to police, the victims were travelling from Udumalai towards Pollachi when the accident occurred on Sunday afternoon. Preliminary findings indicate that the lorry had been parked along the highway while workers were watering roadside plants.
The car, reportedly travelling at high speed, collided with the rear of the stationary vehicle with such force that its front portion was completely crushed, trapping all five occupants inside. The three women and two men in the car died on the spot.
Local residents and passing motorists alerted emergency services, following which police and rescue personnel rushed to the scene. The victims were extricated from the mangled vehicle and their bodies were shifted to a government hospital for post-mortem examination.
The accident also disrupted traffic on the busy highway until damaged vehicles were removed and the road was cleared.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Investigators are examining whether excessive speed, the positioning of the stationary lorry or other factors contributed to the fatal collision.
The latest tragedy adds to a series of fatal road accidents reported across Tamil Nadu in recent weeks. On July 24, six people were killed in two separate crashes in Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts, while three people lost their lives in a collision involving a car and a tanker lorry in Tiruppur district on July 18. Earlier, on July 13, six people were killed and 41 others injured in a collision between an omni bus and a government bus near Vanchinagaram.
The recurring accidents have once again highlighted concerns over speeding, highway safety and the risks posed by stationary vehicles on busy national highways.
