Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha has praised the outstanding performances of India’s women athletes at the Commonwealth Games 2026, saying their achievements have become the cornerstone of the country’s successful campaign while inspiring a new generation of aspiring sportspersons.
With Indian women accounting for eight of the country’s 13 gold medals in Glasgow, Usha described their success as a reflection of years of dedication by athletes, their families, coaches and support staff. She said every medal represented perseverance and sacrifice, while also reinforcing the message that Indian women are capable of excelling on the global sporting stage.
India’s women’s contingent has delivered memorable performances across multiple disciplines. Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu continued her dominance by securing another Commonwealth Games weightlifting gold, while para athlete Sharmila Dhankar claimed the top podium finish in the women’s shot put event.
Judoka Asmita Dey scripted history by becoming India’s first Commonwealth Games gold medallist in judo. In boxing, India enjoyed an exceptional campaign as Sakshi Chaudhary, Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Priya Ghanghas and Arundhati Choudhary all captured gold medals, underlining the remarkable progress of Indian women’s boxing over the past decade.
Usha said the athletes’ performances reflected the positive transformation in Indian sports, supported by improved infrastructure, better coaching facilities, stronger grassroots development and enhanced support systems for women athletes.
She also noted that the success of India’s women athletes extends beyond medals, as they continue to inspire millions of young girls across the country to pursue sporting excellence and represent India on the international stage.
According to the IOA President, the achievements in Glasgow exemplify the spirit of “Nari Shakti” and demonstrate the growing depth, consistency and confidence of Indian women across a wide range of sporting disciplines.
