Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu has credited the government’s continued investment in sports infrastructure and athlete development for India’s growing success on the international stage, saying sustained support will help the country produce more champions in the years ahead.
The celebrated weightlifter made the remarks after returning from the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she scripted history by winning her third consecutive gold medal in the women’s 48kg category.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Chanu on social media, describing her latest achievement as “another glorious chapter in Indian Weightlifting” and praising her remarkable consistency at the Commonwealth Games.
Responding to the Prime Minister’s message, Chanu said Indian sports have undergone significant transformation due to improved government support. She emphasised the importance of expanding quality training infrastructure, providing athletes with opportunities to train abroad before major competitions, and extending assistance to both established and emerging sportspersons.
She expressed confidence that continued investment across all disciplines would inspire the next generation of athletes and enable India to win even more medals at global events.
Chanu’s Glasgow campaign was marked by a record-breaking performance. After missing her opening 82kg snatch attempt, she successfully lifted the weight on her second try before clearing 85kg to set new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records in the snatch.
She then secured the gold medal with a successful 105kg clean and jerk, wrapping up victory before the competition concluded.
Looking ahead, the Tokyo Olympic silver medallist said her focus has already shifted to the upcoming Asian Games, where she hopes to capture her first gold medal. She added that she intends to maintain her current training rhythm as she prepares for the continental event.
Chanu’s latest triumph adds to an illustrious Commonwealth Games career that now includes gold medals from Gold Coast 2018, Birmingham 2022 and Glasgow 2026, further cementing her status as one of India’s greatest weightlifters.
