India’s medal-winning weightlifters returned home to a warm reception on Sunday following a successful campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with fans, family members and supporters gathering at the Indira Gandhi International Airport to celebrate their achievements.
Among those welcomed were Olympic medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, heavyweight lifter Lovepreet Singh and Gyaneshwari Yadav, all of whom contributed to India’s impressive performance in weightlifting.
Mirabai Chanu further cemented her status as one of India’s most accomplished weightlifters by clinching her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 49kg category. Reflecting on her achievement, the Manipur star said she felt proud to have brought glory to both her home state and the country.
“Coming from Manipur, I feel really proud that I have done something good for my country,” Mirabai said after arriving in New Delhi.
Punjab’s Lovepreet Singh also received an enthusiastic welcome after securing the silver medal in the men’s +110kg category. He narrowly missed the gold by just one kilogram after recording a total lift of 388kg, which included a Commonwealth Games record lift of 176kg in the snatch.
Expressing gratitude to his coaches and senior athletes for their support, Lovepreet said his attention has already shifted to the next major challenge.
“I am feeling very good. I thank Captain Vijay sir and all the senior players who guided me. I will definitely aim to win the gold medal at the Asian Games,” he said.
Gyaneshwari Yadav, who claimed silver in the women’s 53kg category, said her family was thrilled with her achievement. She also expressed confidence of upgrading her medal when India hosts the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
India concluded its weightlifting campaign in Glasgow with a total of eight medals—one gold, six silver and one bronze—continuing the sport’s rich tradition of success at the Commonwealth Games.
