Veteran India fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has said that returning to the national team is no longer the driving force behind his cricket career, adding that he continues to play because of his passion for the sport.
The 36-year-old pacer, who last represented India in 2022, said he has already fulfilled his dream of playing international cricket and feels no pressure to prove himself again.
Bhuvneshwar has featured in 21 Tests, 121 ODIs and 87 T20Is for India. Speaking on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Podcast, he said playing domestic cricket and the IPL now comes from his love for the game rather than a desire to achieve a national recall.
“I’ve already played for India. That’s not something I have to achieve now. If I get another opportunity, that’s great, but I’ve been there,” Bhuvneshwar said.
He added that he remains focused on maintaining discipline, staying match-fit and enjoying cricket while managing his workload through domestic competitions and the UP T20 League.
Reflecting on his career away from international cricket, Bhuvneshwar credited his family for helping him remain positive and accept the transition.
He said cricket-related discussions are rarely a topic at home and that his family environment helped him avoid regrets over selection decisions.
“I understand that transitions are a part of sport. I understand that generations change. I’m not the first player to experience this, and I certainly won’t be the last,” he said.
Bhuvneshwar, who took 28 wickets in 16 matches during IPL 2026, also praised the role of the Indian Premier League in developing fast bowling talent in the country.
He credited former India captain Virat Kohli and ex-head coach Ravi Shastri for promoting a strong pace-bowling culture and preparing the team for overseas challenges by encouraging fast-bowling-friendly conditions.
The Meerut-born cricketer also recalled the influence of former India pacer Praveen Kumar, saying he learned a great deal by observing him during his early years.
Bhuvneshwar said the guidance from coaches and senior players helped build the bowling foundation that continues to support his career.
