Four members of a family, including three sisters, died after drowning in a pond in Rajasthan’s Dholpur district on Sunday while attempting to rescue a young man who had fallen into the water.
The tragedy occurred in Dhaundh Birja village under the Angai police station area, where the family had gathered to visit Hiraman Baba Temple, a local folk deity, on the occasion of Dauj, a festival observed after Raksha Bandhan.
According to officials, 23-year-old Bholu alias Ravi, a resident of Nathua Pura, had gone towards a nearby pond to bathe. He was reportedly taking a selfie on his mobile phone when he lost his footing and fell into the deep water.
When his sisters realised that he was struggling in the pond, Manorama and Boto, along with their cousin Nisha, rushed to his aid and entered the water in an attempt to rescue him.
However, the pond’s depth and high water level proved fatal, and all four drowned.
The incident triggered shock and grief in the village as relatives and a large number of residents gathered at the spot after receiving information about the tragedy. Police were also informed.
Police, assisted by local divers and personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), recovered all four bodies from the pond.
The bodies were taken to the government hospital in Sarmathura, where postmortems were conducted in the presence of family members. After the procedures were completed, the bodies were handed over to their respective families.
The deceased have been identified as 30-year-old Manorama of Mauhari Tajpur, 36-year-old Boto of Ramratan Ka Pura, 21-year-old Nisha of Nathua Pura and 23-year-old Bholu alias Ravi of Nathua Pura.
The deaths of all four members of the family have left their relatives and the local community in deep grief.
