The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday said contact had been re-established with around 50 Indian nationals in Nepal who were earlier uncontactable, while 108 Indians have so far been rescued following devastating floods that struck the Himalayan nation on Wednesday.
In its latest update, the MEA said more than 275 Indian nationals and 128 persons of Indian origin remained missing or uncontactable.
“Till date, 108 Indian nationals have been rescued in Nepal, and contact was re-established with around 50 Indian nationals who were earlier uncontactable,” the Ministry said.
The MEA added that 598 Indian nationals had safely crossed into Nepal from China over the past two days, according to local government sources in China. Around 900 Indians remain on the Chinese side but are reported to be safe and contactable.
The Indian embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing continue to coordinate with relevant stakeholders on search, rescue and relief operations for Indians affected by the flash floods.
The missions are also working to ensure the safety and well-being of rescued Indians, facilitate their return to India wherever required, and assist pilgrims returning through Nepal after undertaking the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.
Highlighting the close ties between India and Nepal, the MEA said the two countries share longstanding civilisational and people-to-people links.
“With many Indian nationals having also lost their lives, the people of India share in the grief caused by these devastating flash floods. India stands in solidarity with Nepal in this tragic time, and remains committed to providing all possible assistance,” it said.
Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said the Nepal government was releasing photographs and descriptions of deceased persons through the Nepal Police website.
The Embassy said it was working closely with Nepali authorities, including the Nepal Police, to identify deceased Indian nationals and facilitate the handover of their mortal remains to their next of kin.
It said further updates would be provided in coordination with the Nepali authorities.
